Italy | 2012 | 77 minutes | directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani
Italian with English subtitles

The Taviani brothers explore the genres of filmed performance and communitybased theatre with this stunningly devised rendition of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, performed by life-toughened inmates of the high-security Rebibbia prison in Rome. With its stunning monochromatic cinematography, unforgettable amateur-actors (often with Mafia credentials), and Shakespeare’s Italian plot of power, trust and betrayal, the film exploits the particular forces of cinema and theatre so as to find a new genre between them. Winner of the Golden Bear, Berlin International Festival, 2012.
