Christian Shlingensief’s audacious, witty and eccentric works of agitation transformed many assumptions concerning political theatre and performance in the late 1990’s, marking him as a singular theatrical iconic figure even before his premature death in 2010. Blending various media and fluctuating between social and cultural contexts (from the Venice biennale to MTV to mass demonstrations), this enfant terrible of German theatre probed the limits of political discourse as well as personal agency and freedom in the context of developed capitalist democracies. This illuminating and hilarious documentary focuses on one of Shlingensief’s most ambitious projects: the founding of a real political party and the launch of a presidential campaign – from a circus tent outside the Volksbühne Berlin.

Kathrin Krottenthaler was a member of Christoph Schlingensief’s team during numerous productions at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin, Burgtheater Wien, Haus der Kunst München, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Amazonas Manaus and Filmgalerie 451.

Filmgalerie 451 (Frieder Schlaich) has produced some of Schlingensief’s films and now distributes his complete filmic work worldwide (including his small, lesser-known films,  such as early Super-8 works) and further editions of his theatre works and actions.
