Nou·Fate follows Professor Guo Lei of the Beijing Dance Academy in his quest to create a dance drama based on the ancient and seldom-discussed Nuo tradition. Interviews with specialists and performers explore the different dimensions of this tradition, its historical and contemporary contexts and meanings, as well as the training and experiences of the performers. Based on first-hand access and research by a dance academy graduate, the film offers a rare glimpse into one of China’s most compelling performative practices.

Hu Xiao Jiao graduated from Beijing Dance Academy, where she majored in Chinese folk dance. Known in China as the “cradle of dancers”, the highly selective academy was established in 1954 to rigorously train secondary, undergraduate and graduate-level dancers in various forms of dance.
